Story by: Ian Boothby

Art by: John Delaney, Dan Davis

Cover by: Jason Ho

Publisher: Bongo Comics

Cover Price: $2.99 (USD)

Release Date: September 9, 2010

Review:

Whether you want to admit it or not, Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book is actually gripping you in its storyline.  Just when all was thought to be quiet after Comic Book Guy’s death and the Geek vs. Nerd War has ended, we find that things might not be as they seem.  We all figured Bart, or even Homer, would try to claim that Comic Book Guy was not dead, but nobody suspected down-to-earth Lisa Simpson to think there are shenanigans taking place.  When Homer convinces Chief Wigam to open the grave of freshly buried Comic Book Guy, you will never guess what happens.

This comic series is taking off quickly and surprisingly becoming addicting.  I recommend it as a must read mini-series.

Issue #2 Cover Art

Release Date: August 2010

Review: Comic Book Guy: The Comic Book issue #2 is, believe it or not, a really good read.  The story line in this issue grabs you and makes the reader want to read more.  Matt Groening did a great job of creating art and storyline where as you read; you can hear the voices of the characters from the television show.  The one thing I wish this issue had like Issue #1 is the multiple cover art inside the comic.

Since it is advertised on the cover, this isn’t really a spoiler alert, but Stan Lee makes a great cameo appearance in this issue.  This is actually pretty cleaver considering again that this is a comic book created about comic books in The Simpson World.  I am not 100% convinced that Comic Book guy is really dead.  The references to Comic Book Guy and the Internet are HILARIOUS.  I really enjoyed this issue and ill leave you with the small thought of, ‘You won’t believe who inherits the Android’s Dungeon.’

Ratings:

Comic Book Guy: The Comic – Issue #1

Cover Art

Multiple Cover Art for Issue #1

Publisher: Bongo Comics

Art: Matt Groening

Release Date: July 2010

Review: Firstly, I must say this comic mini-series is in a league of its own.  Unlike other comic book series that are made to be graphically intense and mostly pertaining to superheroes, Comic Book Guy: The Comic does things a little differently.

The reader will first notice the Cover Art.  As the reader continues they will notice three more fully drawn covers.  This helps play into the comic book theme of the comic book, essentially creating a comic book within a comic book, or as I like to say, creating comic inception [movie buffs will get this reference].  The story line is humorous as with any typical Simpsons based comic.  The characters are all of our old friends from Springfield including the main character, Comic Book Guy.  Comic Book Guy has a new arch-enemy, the Graphical Novel Kid.

CBH Member RANDAL says it best:

“Much like an episode of The Simpsons, there are multiple storylines going on at once. Each offers huge laughs as the TCG tries to find fame on the internet by filming various “death scenes” from comics and movies. I don’t want to give too much away, but I can assure that this is really funny book and well worth a look. “Worst comic ever?”… I don’t think so.”

The story progresses through and towards the end, a horrible accident leaves everyone to believe that Comic Book Guy is dead.  Is he really dead?  Is this the end of a character that has been on The Simpsons for all 20 seasons?  We will have to wait until Issue #2 of this five part series.

Ratings:

Cover Art:                           ***** (5/5) Multiple Covers within one issue.

Art:                                    ***** (5/5)

Story:                                 **** (4/5)

*Note:  The art receives a (5/5) based on its own genre of comic.  This is not being compared to other mainstream comic series.

The Data in the World Around Us

Posted: October 11, 2010 by homer13technology in Technology

Technology is ever increasing and has been growing exponentially for years.  While driving the other day I noticed a field full of cell phone towers, and it made me think.  Have you ever thought about all the data that is continuously flowing around us?

If you were to go outside and stand in the middle of the front lawn you would be amazed at what is around you.  There are cell phone signals sending not only voice, but data containing text messages and internet feeds.  There is WiFi signals from neighbor’s houses transmitting data to the internet.  There are satellite dishes with television signals and Bluetooth devices nearby too.  This seems like a lot, but take into consideration this is just wireless data.

As you stand there look up and see the telephone poles with voice and DSL data flowing freely.  Now look down and think about the miles and miles of coaxial cable carrying television service and cable internet.  In some areas there are even fiber optic lines carrying high speed data thousands of miles in just seconds.

All of this data is just flowing around you making day to day operations, and things we take for granted, possible.

Marvelous Land of OZ Issue #1

Posted: October 3, 2010 by masondixonskyblu in Comic Book and Graphic Novel Reviews

Marvelous Land of OZ Issue 1 Cover

The Marvelous Land of OZ Issue #1

The Marvelous Land of Oz is a Marvel Series. This 8 comic book series takes you through the Land of Oz after Dorothy and her friends have made their impact. The Scarecrow is the Emperor of Oz, and the Tin Woodsmen is the Emperor of the Winkies.

The first comic in the 8 comic series introduces the series discussing the life of the main character Tip. Tip was a little boy that was raised by an evil and witchy woman named Mombi. Mombi used him as her personal slave. Tip tried to escape, but Tip and Mombi both have different plans as to how this is going to happen.  Tip makes a new friend out of Pumpkin Man that was brought to life between the short and brief struggle of Mombi and Tip. However, it ends abruptly making you wait for the second comic.

The art in the first comic is amazing. It has great color and everything has great detail. It reminds me a lot of the Manga characters and the detail they have. The Pumpkin Man has a tremendous amount of vines and a woody body. The boy, Tip, is depicted as poor and hard working. The woods  are eerie and give you a sense of thrill and wonder.

Review: The 2nd issue of the World of Warcraft comic series has exceptional artwork.  One thing the reader will notice is the great detail that has been put into this issue.  As we follow the pinkskin nicknamed “Croc-Bait”, and his fellow fighters Broll and Valeera through this issue we notice the amount of detail in each scene.  The artistic attention to the crowd during a fight scene is amazing.  There are many different types of races and classes drawn into each page.  My personal favorite scene which is on pages 8 and 9 depicts the team flying through the mountainside of Feralas in South Western Kalimdor.  The detail in the artwork of the flying ship is immense.

The story is slightly dry for a few pages, which is to be expected as the story builds.  The fight scenes are described well, and have the perfect artwork to follow.  The ending leaves the reader hungry for more as we learn a small amount as to the past of “Croc-Bait”.  Personally, I will be anxious to see where this story goes and to see how the artwork progresses.
